So is THIS where technology is taking us?

Hubby just popped his head through the door to inform me that we've been invited to a friend's birthday party.

My first thought?

Have I become such a hermit of late that my friends are now completely bypassing me and going directly to Hubby in hopes of receiving an affirmative to whatever occasion they might be hosting?

Turns out this is not the case at all, which is good, because otherwise I'd be all kind of offended.

Apparently, the invite was posted on FaceBook for all to see and respond.

Not even a personal email invite?!  The nerve.  I realize that apparently the days are long gone when I could walk out to the mailbox and actually open a physical envelope with an invitation (although I must say, that I continue to send invitations that way.....I'm just sayin......and yeah, you'll most likely receive a handwritten thank you note from me too.....).

Nope, I have evolved with the times.  I can easily accept an emailed invite that was sent to me and a bunch of others.  But to be invited via an open invitation on FaceBook?  Well, that just offends me - on a whole different level than the thought of bypassing me (the official scheduler of this family!) completely.

Where is the personal touch?  Where is the love? Where is the feeling of "we are having an intimate gathering of 300 people and would love for you to be there?"  Where is that "you are, oh so special, that you are invited" feeling.

I'll tell you where - it's NOT there!  At all.

I'm feeling unloved and not very special right now.

  1. I found out that I was going to be a aunt via facebook. You are right. It kind of takes away the special part of it. :(

  2. Yes but they DID accept you as friend of Facebook. (Where is that sarcastic font when you need it most?)

  3. unfortunately, that's where technology is headed. a bunch of the girls i worked with this summer though really like writing letters and using "snail mail" because it does make you feel a whole lot more special than an electronic message. and open facebook invites are just rude anyway. that's a tool for a lazy person. if they're gonna facebook you, they could at least send a message :)

  5. I just opened a facebook account the other day and I have to admit that I just don't get it.

Now if the invitation was via Twitter, I'd perfectly understand. . .

  6. Obviously it's not an actual PARTY but a gathering of Facebook friends, right? I hardly ever use snail mail any more, but if I were having a party and only using Facebook, I'd at least make a list of all I wanted to come and send a personal invitation, which FB allows you to do. But then again, I'd never invite like that but instead use the telephone and make actual contact.

  7. Oh no! I just was at another blog that is quitting facebook : )
I love it because of the picture posting : ) and I do feel like a super star when I get a message. A total super star!

  8. My daughter just did her 18th party invitation for all her friends on facebook. We have ordered lovely invitations but only 50 as they are so expensive.

  9. I have to say I'm on the fence on this one. Only because I hate clutter and to me most mail equals clutter. It's easier for me to respond on Facebook and not have to hold the invitation on my desk. Jeez I sound lazy!

  10. I like written invitations too and I always write thank you notes!!! Face book is great but I think it keeps us from writing letters and oh how I like getting letters. My sister in law lately has been asking to speek to my husband about get togethers......hmm doesn't she like me anymore......and doesn't she know I decide if we go or not...does that sound mean. We always do go!!

  14. Well, maybe you'd have felt the looove if the FB account was set up in BOTH of your names? I'm making the leap that it's just in hubby's name?

Maybe FB heard how much you despise it? Facebook has feelings too, I've heard. I wouldn't personally know. I despise FB too. (Uh-oh....)

  15. Love the handwritten stuff versus online and sometimes send cards out just so I can imagine how pleased someone will be to open a card for no good reason.

That's egotistical, now that I think of it.

  18. I too would be offended. To receive such an invitation suggests that 'you are just one of them' instead of 'special'.

  19. I agree....it's what children do but not adults!! How rude. x

  21. I feel you.

A Facebook invite is totally lazy--UNLESS--it's a friend you see all.the.time.

My best friend that I call constantly? She can totally send me a FB invite to her party. Someone from my mom's group that I see every Friday? Sure!

The friend I only see once every 2 months? Uh, no. Dude, pick up the phone and make some sort of an attempt to keep the friendship alive.

  22. I like getting letters. But I don't really mind electronic invites. They save trees.
