It's a wonder I don't drink more.....

Corporate America. . . it confounds me on a daily basis.  But this one?  This one takes the cake.

Remember when I told you that my dear friend and colleague had decided to retire and leave me alone with the wolves?  Well, because of her selfish decision our department has been left in total chaos.  Well, not really - but there have been a lot of "what ifs" and "what nows".  Which all could have been avoided if Mr. Big Dog in our department had dealt with this prior to her leaving.  I mean, it's not like she waited until the last minute to announce her retirement - she gave at least two months notice before she ran off to do whatever it is retired people do.

Because of his inaction (and lack of thinking things through) it came to pass that I had to apply for the job that I am currently doing.  The position that I've held for the past five and half years.

I know - right?  It doesn't make any sense.  But whatever.  I applied.

And was then promptly informed by Human Resources that I wasn't qualified.

*sigh*

  4. *sigh* Something similar is happening to Derek - the job he's been doing since last August (with an exception of a 3 week lay off), he has to apply for again come April. Corporations are such bastards.

  6. ...actually I'm not surprised. I figure you should send a memo to your boss with a copy to HR stating, "I'm sorry I can't do the job that I have been doing for the last five years anymore. HR says I am not qualified."

  7. Something is rotten in this situation. And someone, it seems... please keep me posted on how this plays out, it's very enlightening. I am glad I am retired. I gave my boss more than a year advance warning, but he just didn't believe I would ever really leave.

  9. I'm sorry to hear this. HR people in my view are mostly incompetent buffoons.

    Consider yourself hugged!

I can assure you though that 'Corporate Europe' is just as bad.

I once spent 6 months as acting department head only to be told that my imminent (and promised) permanent promotion was being shelved because the boss reckoned a 26 year old graduate could do the job better.

He lasted 10 weeks before screwing up and being replaced by someone else.

I had told them to stuff their job and left by then.

  12. Time to tell HR that the only job in the place for which you are qualified is the position currently held by your boss. While you are at it, tell them the only way you'll take it is if it comes with a big pay raise. ;-)

    Hope it all works out.

  14. Oh, God! I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

this is unbelievable. So, all this time...you've been doing a job you are not qualified to do.

Gee, this must mean you're qualified for the boss' job, right??

  18. Every year, around hunting season here in Alaska, things at Mike's office seem to be short one attorney, and every year, his boss takes a month off for hunting season...
