Seasonal Foods - Juniper News - A New to Us App

Buckle up buttercups - this is going to be a ping-pong kind of post where we jump from random topic to random topic...or, in other words, pretty much how every conversation (in real life) with me can sometimes go...

***

The high today was in the mid-80's.  But The Husband was in the kitchen concocting a soup.

This is a topic that we have disagreed on for all the years we've been married.  In my mind soups, stews, chilis, etc. are hearty dishes that are "cool weather" dishes. He disagrees and thinks that anything goes any time of the year - the weirdo.

My thoughts on seasonal foods extend into desserts.  To me, I would group praline cake and any other "heavier" type of dessert into a "cool weather" dish.  And a lemon pound cake or coconut cake - these are all "warm weather" desserts...much to Man Child's consternation - as the praline cake is one of his favorites and I am loathe to make it in the summer months.  In his mind, any dessert is free from my seasonal no-no list - it's obvious he gets this insanity from his father, the weirdo.

MOST OF THE JUNIPER IS OUT!  Granted, we've still got the hot mess going on up next to the house (I'll deal with that another day), but the main vermin and weed infested eyesore is GONE.

I never claimed to be a photographer...

As of yesterday, the grass seed is spread and we are crossing our fingers and hoping that grass actually comes in.  But, honestly, at this point of the game I'd rather look at dirt than at that damn juniper.

But still - let's take a moment to bow our heads and pray for the grass to grow...

As we all know, I am not the "chef" in this house - hence the need for me to show up at the grocery store is rare - unless it involves wine or baking supplies.  I am lucky - I admit it.  I also REALLY appreciate it - it's one of the many reasons I keep him around despite him being a weirdo that wants soup in the middle of summer.

At any rate, all of that to say - I just heard about grocery store apps.  I'm sure the majority of you know about these little miracles - so I am here to talk to those of you that don't.  Somewhere in my internet travels, I happened upon something that mentioned them - normally, I would have skimmed right over that knowledge and never thought of it again - but this time it caught my attention because The Husband had JUST returned from the grocery store and had forgotten a much needed item AGAIN - which, in the whole scheme of things isn't a disaster usually, as he will probably be back at the grocery store before I can blink - I swear, I think the grocery store people see him more than I do.

At any rate, I did some research (have you met me?  Of course, I did!) and downloaded the Our Groceries app onto both of our phones.  I then showed The Husband how it all worked.  With this app, we can add items to the grocery list that updates in real time on both of our phones.  I cautioned him that we would both need to remember to check it...figuring he would promptly forget all about the app.

I was wrong.

Last night, I was playing with the app - trying to figure out all the ins and outs and added some things to the list - meaning to delete them.  What can I say - I forgot.  The next thing I know, The Husband comes walking in the door with all of the items from the list.  Luckily for me, it was all staples so nothing will go to waste.

At any rate, this app is - so far - a keeper for us - as long as we both keep remembering to check it.

So what say you, friends?  Is soup, chili, etc. a "cool weather" food or do you follow The Husband's devil-may-care attitude when it comes to seasons and food?

  1. One thing to keep in mind using store delivery apps - you pay a delivery fee, sometimes a service charge, the prices of the items are usually a bit higher that in the store, and if you have heavy items, they will charge you a 'heavy item' charge. Also, they hint that you leave your shopper a tip. And then there's the person who delivers the order. He gets a tip too! All of which tends to add up significantly to the weekly food bill. But I will admit, not having to lug heavy water jugs and 12 packs of seltzer almost makes it worth it.

  2. The juniper is gone!!! Hallelujah!

I group foods into warm weather and cold weather foods as well, desserts included. Well, it's rarely hot here, but still, for a few months I veer away from cold weather foods.

  3. I made a casserole last night and told Dan, "Ugh! It's way too hot for a casserole! What was I thinking?"

    1. Yes, a casserole is something I would consider as a winter sort of meal.

  4. We have the Remember The Milk [RTM] app on our phones which allow us to keep one list going that we both can access. Of course during this last year of being home together all the time, we've barely used it. I'm glad that you were only listing staples. Could have been the most expensive grocery haul ever!

    1. Yes, very lucky it was only a few staples. We went with Our Groceries but I remember looking at Remember The Milk. I can see, when we somehow get back to normal, it being very useful.

  5. I too feel very fortunate to have a resident food guy. He wouldn't ever use an app like that, though, he likes to get it all himself! And yay for the juniper being gone!

    1. My husband also likes to get the groceries himself and with this app he still - but I can add items to the list and it will update on his phone - it's basically a grocery list on his phone

  6. I agree. I make meatloaf and chili only in the winter months. Plus cheesy chicken it cooks forever abd heats up the house too much in the summer. Now desserts, hmm . . . I guess pies are more summer-ish but I would not hesitate to make something regardless of the season. In my book we can enjoy a treat ANYTIME.

The app sounds useful, if only people bothered to let me know when we were running low of something.

Congrats on being rid of the juniper.

    1. Oh, I agree treats can be enjoyed anytime but in the summer I lean more to light, citrus-y types of things like lemon bars, coconut cake, etc.

  7. I agree with you on soup in the winter and fall. If I am in a restaurant though, I may eat it. I just won't cook it in my kitchen. I do have a friend who won't eat ice cream in the winter though and that's where I draw the line lmao. I eat that stuff year-round.

Yay to the juniper being gone! Bye bye snakes!

  8. I go with The Husband, especially if he is willing to run all the errands.

  9. I understand where you're coming from about seasonal dishes. Sometimes, though, rarely, like once in five years or more, it's great to eat Thanksgiving during late spring/early summer! Just because... ;)

Also, yay! ding, dong the juniper's gone! Hugs, Mona

  10. We have had 3 days of rain and 50 degrees after an 80-90 degree week long stretch. The first thing I did after drying off from delivering mail all day?

I made chili and homemade gluten free honey corn bread. The house smelled delicious... well until a few hours after the chili consumption anyways. *sigh* Life with boys.

  11. I'm with you about the soup, chili, etc....BUT, if someone else is cooking, I'll be a happy (weirdo) camper over here sweating eating soup in July.
Yay for the snake infested juniper removal!
I had NO idea about that app and I'm here for it!

  12. I'm with you about seasonal foods like that. I won't heat up the house with long-cooking things, even if the AC is on. And heavy foods in the heat--no thank you.

Rick is all about apps for everything. I leave the In Process grocery list on the fridge for the week, and he never contributes. Maybe if I tell him about the app, he'd be more involved.

    1. On what? The grass? It's GROWING! Slowly, but growing. The Husband is still making out of season foods...The Grocery List App thing? He either checks it or doesn't - it's hit or miss - but I'm working on training him. ;-)
