Sunday Meanderings

Well, it's been a minute hasn't it?  Which means a long, meandering ramble...

As I type this, The Husband started what he called an "easy" task; installing an updated outlet with USB ports (because, oh my God!  EVERYTHING has a USB cord these days).  As you might surmise, it's not going as easily as he thought it would.

As an example, I literally heard him just say "And THAT's why I'm not a fucking electrician!"

But what really made me laugh earlier is what he said to himself as I walked by while he was Googling something to confirm he was on the right track.

"Wow, that's a nice stripper!  I need to get me one of those."

When I pointed out that wasn't something a wife wanted to hear, he re-played what he said in his head and laughed out loud, clarified, and agreed that wasn't something a wife would want to hear.

He, of course, was talking about a wire stripper - not a stripper stripper.  Or so he says... ;-)

Other than this little domestic vignette; not much else is going on around here.

I have been window shopping a lot lately; as I cleaned out my closet last month and I now have more empty hangers than I do actual clothes.

Does it still count as "window shopping" if you are browsing online?  I suppose it does as your computer screen can be considered a "window" of sorts.

Are any of you following @stylethieffashion on Instagram?  She did a deep dive last week on jeans.  Sizing, silhouettes, styling, etc.  It led me on a hunt for jeans with a 25 inch inseam.  In all my years of walking this earth, the shortest inseam I've ever found is a 28 inch.  And at this point in my life figured that was the best I was ever going to get without having them tailored.  And as I generally wear super skinny jeans, at least the hem would bunch up around my ankles and not drag the floor.

But, I sourced a pair of "skinny" jeans from Loft that has a 25 inch inseam and they are winging their way to me as I type.  We shall see how this pans out.

Other than Loft, I have yet to find a brand that actually has clothing with 25 inch inseams.  You wouldn't think those three inches are such a big deal; but they kind of are.

So if you have any intel on brands that have shorter inseams - feel free to share!

In other news, we have moved into our new office.  I don't hate it but I don't love it either.  If given my druthers, I'd rather have my old space back.

This new space is clean and modern - but despite the space, it has the majority of us piled on top of each other resulting in a lot of wasted space.  And it's LOUD.  In my old space, I had plenty of room, quiet and anonymity.  But now?  Not so much.

And, from what I gather from other departments, it lacks storage.  Somehow, by some miracle, in our small department, we have a tiny bit of storage.  I think that is because whenever I was asked what our department NEEDED in the new space, I insisted that we needed room for our files (most of which are gone now), so we ended up with many more cabinets than other departments.  In fact, I heard that we ended up having to lease extra space on another floor specifically for storage for other departments.

Seems to me, that some of these decisions were not thought through and/or the point person in our department really advocated for what I said we needed.

And this is where the conversation devolves into chatting about the weather.

I think we have skated through the winter season for good now (thank God!).  Yes, some days it's still chilly but the daffodils are blooming and the tulips aren't far behind (which reminds me I forgot to plant the tulips I bought last fall...oh well...maybe this year?)! And that means Peony Watch 2024 will begin soon.  Well, I should say, I hope so.  Our yard guy cut the peonies back last year; which shocked me because he didn't cut them back the year before.  And I've never cut them back, so I will begin monitoring them for signs of renewal *fingers crossed* shortly.  In the meantime, we are just going to assume he knew what he was doing...right?

OH!  And one of my many (never re-blooming) orchids is blooming AND another has four buds on it!!!! Apparently, it takes many years of patience for any orchids to re-bloom in this house; hence the multiple exclamation points in the previous sentence.

Although, I recently saw a post somewhere about taking them out of the pot and putting them into a vase/jar of water.   I may try that with the puniest of the bunch to see what happens.  I'll report back if it is a success.

That's all the news that is fit to post from here.  Anything exciting on your end?

  1. Happy to see you posting. I miss your ramblings. Yep to the USB cord, yep it is window shopping, nope to a loud office, and yay about the orchids. I love posts like this one.

    1. Thanks, Ally! I keep trying to post more and then get sidetracked by life.

  2. I love my (wire) stripper *so much* - sure, you can (usually) peel off the insulation with a knife or scissors, but 1. it's easy to accidentally cut through the wire as well, 2. it's less of a clean cut, and 3. with a wire stripper, your fingertips are at zero risk. That said, I do a lot of wire-peeling every year, which makes a difference.

    1. I guess I'll need to put on my detective hat and figure out which wire stripper he was talking about to surprise him with his very own stripper.

  3. I know people say you can tailor jeans, but I've never had them tailored when there wasn't a big lump right next to my ankle that rubs. I am clearly quite picky about my jeans!

    1. I'm also very picky about my jeans; so I'm curious to see how these compare to my beloved (albeit too long) Levi's. I've seen different methods for tailoring jeans which should eliminate the lump but I have yet to take a pair to be tailored for fear that they'll botch it up.

  4. Ha - the stripper remark cracks me up. I have often wanted my own (wire) stripper. They are very useful!

Yay for a re-blooming orchid! I fear that my orchid is on its last legs. But it has surprised me before, so perhaps there's hope.

While I don't know anything about your peony situation, I had peonies at my old house and we cut them down to the ground every fall and they came right back up every spring. So I hope your peonies do well!

    1. The stripper remark had me in tears, I was laughing so hard! He was clueless until I pointed it out. I figure if the orchid leaves are still green, then there is still hope. Thanks for telling me that your peonies came back successfully; that gives me hope!

  5. I am in the opposite situation . . . jeans in long lengths are a must for curly and Mini and I. I hope yours workout. The stripper remark is too funny. I rarely plant anything so no advice there.

Curly's team took 4th in state and Reg's bball season is over and Ed moved out . . . that is our news in a short summary.

    1. I imagine that being on the other end of the jeans spectrum is just as difficult. I know manufacturers can't produce for every single body type but jeez, it seems like they are pretty narrow with what they offer.

  6. I enjoy a good ramble! Here today, I am trying not to focus too much on how I hate the time change, and am appreciating that the humidity of the last few days is gone, for now at least!

    1. Rambling is what I do best....I am glad to hear the humidity is gone (for now); I figure it will be here faster than I would like. But, I won't complain (too much) since the cold will be gone.

  7. I wasn't following that account BUT I AM NOW! Thanks so much for the recommendation.
I've never looked for a 25 inch inseam because I'm on the tall side, but I'll keep an eye out for you!

    1. I think you will enjoy Erin's account, Nicole. She's great. I think you will especially appreciate her philosophy of making the clothes work for you and not you changing your body for your clothes.

  8. I am short, but a 25 inch inseam sure seems short to me. I like a 28 but it's been a long time since I've bought anything new. I wear my clothes for decades, it seems.

    1. I never even knew that there was an option for a 25 inch inseam! Which is why I have contented myself with the 28; which is fine usually - unless I'm wearing something other than skinny jeans. Wearing your clothes for decades is a sign that you love what you own.

  9. My sympathies about any projects involving electrical work. That quote from your husband has been said--verbatim--by my husband so many times. We recently got a new TV (55") that he mounted to the wall. This necessitated hiding all the wiring in the closet. And mounting a sound bar.

Let's just say I made myself scarce.

    1. I don't blame you for making yourself scarce - I did the same and hid out in the office while he played electrician.

  10. Um, we have the in-wall USB outlets, but now they're moving everything to the USB Type-C. You might want to just skip ahead to that one. 🫣
I don't think orchids like sitting in water; their roots like air.
Hmmmmm....I'll be interested to know about your new jeans. Also, I didn't know you were shorter than me! :)
Let's keep the stripper stuff to a minimum, this is a family blog. HA!

    1. Oh, and I pray that your peonies come back better! Please update us on those.

    2. Of course they are moving to the Type-C! I thought the same about orchids preferring air to water. I'm on the fence about whether or not to try it. Suz, I'm shorter than every adult I know...I just didn't realize how short until I measure my inseam!

  11. I killed my orchid but have managed to get the Christmas cactus flowering. No idea how as I'm definitely not green fingered.

    1. When I still had a Christmas cactus it faithfully flowered...every Easter. These orchids won't die but they just refuse to re-bloom. That's why it's a big deal when one actually does!

  12. Thanks for popping by my blog today, Gigi. I had a good laugh at your "stripper" anecdote!

  13. Maybe it was a stripper advertizing a stripper? Now that could be something.... Our tulips are starting to pop up here, nothing in bloom yet at our house, but at friend's houses for sure. Which is weird becasue you are way further south than us. And we cut the Peonies back every year, all the way down to the ground. I won't uncover them though from the stray leaves and such for another month or so at least. Got to let those baby shoots get strong befor we shock them with overnight cold. I did take the winter over plants out of the basement last week. They *should* be okay outside now. Fingers crossed.
