I haven't posted since JANUARY?! Well, what can I say - without any office nonsense added to the fact I rarely leave the house these days there isn't very much to talk about. Well, at least not anything anyone would want to hear about.
At any rate, I came here to announce that my oven is clean!
It seems like such an insignificant announcement. But it's really not because we have never, ever in the entirety of our marriage used the self-cleaning feature on any of our ovens. Why? Because The Husband, also known as The Resident Nervous Nellie, once read a post about someone who used it and it ruined her oven.
So, because of this I'd put off cleaning the oven (counter-intuitive, I know) until it was so gross that I couldn't stand it. And I'd spend hours on my knees with my head in the oven scouring. And even at that, it never got completely clean.
When I made some muffins the other day, I noticed that the oven had once again reached an unacceptable level of grime. And tried to drum up the fortitude and determination to get it cleaned.
And the mere thought of it exhausted me. So, I made an executive decision and announced that I was going to use the self-cleaning feature. The Husband was aghast. So, I asked him if he had it in him to clean it. The answer, of course, was no. He once again brought up the poor woman whose oven was ruined. And I pointed out that these features have to be safe or they wouldn't be allowed to be features and that most likely, that woman's oven was either a lemon or she did something she shouldn't have.
So I started the self-cleaning feature - I knew that the oven would get extremely hot and that there would most likely be fumes from all the gunk getting burnt off (there was) but what I did not expect was that it would take 4 hours! Had I known that, I would have timed it better (say, after lunch. Needless to say, our lunch that day was delayed by about two hours).
Considering how grimy that oven was, I wasn't expecting much when I opened the oven to wipe everything up after it had cooled down. However, while it's not completely perfect the oven is almost pristine. So much so, that every time I walk in the kitchen I take a little peek just to admire the cleanliness. It's the little things in life, y'all. You can bet that I will never find myself on my knees scrubbing that oven again.
Now, if I could just figure out a way to clean between the glass on the door without having to take the whole door apart.
I have never in my adult life cleaned my oven. There. I said it. I don't even know or what products to use. I don't know if it has a self-cleaning feature. I know nothing.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't have a self-clean button, then I recommend you stay clueless at this point. It is such an awful task.
DeleteI once used the self-cleaning function...in January in Calgary. I was...not expecting the fumes. Again, January. In Calgary. I think it was minus 30. It was pretty bad and I have never used the self-cleaning function since. I did have low-level fear that the oven would burst into flames because it gets so hot! Since then I do use the spray cleaner that has "low fumes" and I scrub. It's a gross job. My oven has the aqua clean function, where you put water in it and run it and SUPPOSEDLY it works a charm. I mean, it doesn't work ZERO. But it doesn't work great. Anyway, I have cleaned my oven many times over the years but I don't think it's ever super clean. I guess I could try the self-clean again, but I'm a little once-bitten, you know?
ReplyDeleteKnowing the fumes would be an issue, I picked my day carefully, so I could open doors and windows while still running the hood vent. It IS a gross job to do it by hand. I will say this, while the self-cleaning wasn't perfect, it was far better than what I could have accomplished with the oven cleaner and scrubbing.
DeleteIt's pretty great, isn't it? And yes, it would be even better if it self-cleaned the glass on the inside of the door. I asked husband to help take the door apart once so I could clean it. It looked great until the door was reassembled and put back on. I had not taken the time to make sure that all liquid from cleaning was gone, and when the door was vertical again, it ran in little rivulets down that inside glass and has now stayed that way ever since because I don't think that door is going to be taken off and taken apart ever again! -Jenn
ReplyDeleteIt is great and I won't be looking back. We took the oven door apart in our last house and I don't want to go through that again!
DeleteMany many years ago when “self clean” was new, I happened to be looking for a new oven. My best friend said if I didn’t get a self-cleaning oven she wouldn’t be my friend any more. That’s how much she loved this (back then) very busy single mom of 4. Well I got a self- clean and have thanked her many times since. Yes, you open the windows and turn on the fan! I do have the quick steam clean feature - it works ok but not the greatest.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful feature, I'm just kicking myself for never utilizing it before now. Even The Husband couldn't believe what a great job it did.
DeleteI remember using it once the last place I lived, and yes, the smell was intense and it took a long time, but boy was it clean! I think I had had a dramatic burn-on event that I was not inclined to scrub.
ReplyDeleteThe smell was bad - but luckily I chose a nice, warm day and was able to open the doors & windows.
DeleteWhat a glorious announcement! I say Hooray for self-cleaning ovens. While I'm at it, let me once again extol the virtues of The Dishwasher, an appliance that I adore and worship. Even though it takes far too long, I refuse to live without one.
ReplyDeleteAnd good for you, presenting that choice to your husband. That's the only way he should ever get A Say.
Oh believe me, I love my dishwasher and my robot vacuum and a bunch of other appliances too. Yeah, when I realized there was no way in God's green earth that he was going to clean that oven, I said ENOUGH.
DeleteHOORAY!!!!! I have used the self clean feature many a time and I fret endlessly until it's done, every time. A friend used her self cleaning feature and the glass of her oven exploded, so I guess I always anticipate that.
ReplyDeleteWhy is the glass so hard to clean?! I am guessing it's for Safety Reasons, but surely the oven manufacturers can find a way to make things Safe while also making them simpler to clean????
Oh my - the glass explosion will live in my head for eternity now! I was just thinking the same about the glass - couldn't they make latches on the side so you can open it? It seems like a no-brainer. Until that happens my glass will be eternally filthy.
DeletePlease! Come clean mine1
ReplyDeleteOnly if I can use the self-clean!
DeleteYou are so funny! I have always used the self cleaning mode, but I can never let it go for the full duration. Why? It gets so hot and stinky!
ReplyDeleteI've always been Pro-Self Cleaning Mode...but recently, I saw where ovens do catch fire in Self Cleaning mode. I know, I've probably just set you back again. SORRY!!!
I will probably still use mine, but I'll not let it go the full cycle, ever.
Hmmm, it didn't occur to me to not let it go the full cycle. So how long do you let it go? I'm aware of the possible fire situation, so for that reason, I'd never leave the house with it running.
