Considering that today is COLD and rainy, it's a good thing I decided to tackle that one lone spot of juniper at the corner of the house yesterday while it was sunny, warm and perfect for playing in the dirt. I had determined that it shall be gone before fall so that I can plant the tulip bulbs that I neglected to plant last year and transplant some languishing irises in it's place. With maybe some beautiful phlox to brighten up that corner after the irises and tulips wane.
I'd been slowly chipping away at this corner for some time; a little bit here and there, but yesterday, I was able to rid the corner of the last of the juniper!
Yay! One less patch of an eyesore/juniper. Two more to go. |
And then I took a quick tour of the yard to see what was what.
The Knockout Roses were working their magic.
The pink irises were shining. I imagine the yellow aren't too far behind. Why the pink ones bloom first is beyond my comprehension, since I have seen them flourishing in other yards already, but in our yard they have to wait their turn apparently.
The hostas are spreading their leaves.
And the stargazer lilies are looking to be spectacular this year; look how tall already!
The hydrangeas have me perplexed. The youngest already has blooms preparing to sprout while the older one does not.
Baby Hydrangea |
Mature Hydrangea - minus the blooms it should have |
My faves, the peonies, are chock full of buds ready to burst into beauty. It's official; Peony Watch 2024 is ON!
Ssh - this one's my favorite! |
Not as spectacular as the other but still pretty outstanding in her own right. |
I'm still pondering ripping out the daylilies and think I have finally decided to replace them with Encore Azaleas, to give me color throughout the entire summer season.
I adore posts about gardens. Our junipers are long gone. Got tired of them. We planted a Knock-out rose bush this weekend, hoping it'll be spectacular. Our hydrangea bushes are a toss up, one is thriving, the other looks sadly. And as for hostas, the deer and rabbits eat them like hot fudge sundaes, so we don't try anymore.
ReplyDeleteThose damn junipers are a thorn in my side. They are useless and ugly. The sooner they are all gone the better! Funny, the deer don't touch our hostas but that may be because of the blackberry thicket at the edge of the woods/yard.
DeleteWow, such beautiful flowers, Gigi! I loved this tour of your garden.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Nicole! I can't wait to see the transformation in your yard!
DeleteLooking at your pictures is like looking two months into the future for me! Yay for getting rid of a shrub you didn't want! If my body was up for it, I'd be constantly ripping out and moving and transplanting, etc. I enjoyed your little garden tour. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenn. My body may not be up to it (Usually)...but my mind demands that it be done, so I dig down and find the will to get it done...eventually. I've been after that one patch for about two years now.
DeleteYour yard is gorgeous! Mine needs so. much. freaking. work. But it will come.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm not sure where you live, but it is definitely warmer than where I live! So much stuff in bud already? I'm still wearing a winter coat on my morning walks...!
Thanks, Elisabeth. It is a lot of work...it takes time, sweat equity and patience, that's for sure. I live in North Carolina so yes, it's definitely warmer, than Canada. Although yesterday was COLD! I had long sleeves a sweater and socks and was still looking for the space heater.
DeleteI too enjoyed this tour in your garden. It's coming along great!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun tour, Gigi! And hooray! All those beautiful blooms and buds make me so happy!
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous. Our flowers are WAY behind this year. Tulips are just starting to appear, my Peonies are only about 10 inches tall so far. Hoping for the yellow ones to make a resurgance. The irises could be planted deeper than the pink, that can effect bloom time. We have to replace the retaining walls around the property, not looking forward to digging up all the tulips, daffodils, irises, etc. that are along the existing one, but it will be fun to redo some of the gardens.
ReplyDeleteYay for saying goodbye to more of your *&^(!@##$ juniper.
ReplyDeleteI also adore your iris's, peonies and Lillies! Everything looks just lovely my friend.
Juniper is hell to get rid of. Kudos to you! That's just a lousy job.
ReplyDeleteYour yard looks so pretty and neat. A testament to your efforts.
